Gum Disease and Mouth Ulcers: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, or do you have mouth ulcers or other periodontal problems that indicate gum disease?

If so, you might appreciate some information about these very common problems!

First of all, you should know that Gum Disease and mouth ulcers are common problems experienced by many people all around the world in various forms. Here are the signs and symptoms of these conditions:
  • Gingivitis: The main symptom of gingivitis is red, swollen gums and bleeding when teeth are brushed.
  • Periodontitis: With periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth, causing pockets that may subsequently become infected. Bleeding when brushing or flossing teeth is almost certain to occur.
  • Mouth Ulcers: Mouth ulcers are technically canker sores, or lesions, that form on the mucous membrane inside the mouth. These are not to be confused with cold sores which form on the outside of the mouth and lips.
If you suffer from any of these problems and believe there is nothing to be concerned about---you’re wrong!

Besides being painful, Gum Disease or mouth ulcers may be indications of more serious disease. Bleeding gums, for example, might signify leukemia, platelet disorders, vitamin deficiencies and certain medications.

Periodontitis is a serious condition in and of itself. If left untreated, the gums, bones and connective tissue that anchor and support the teeth may be destroyed; causing loss of teeth.

Mouth ulcers aren’t to be taken lightly, either! Mouth ulcers might be caused from a variety of factors:

  • Trauma, such as from poorly fitting dentures or the sharp edge of a chipped or broken tooth rubbing against the oral mucosa
  • Alcohol
  • Foods that are too salty or excessively hot
  • Chemicals such as aspirin
  • Chemotherapy
  • Infection, either bacterial, fungal or viral
  • Deficient immune system
  • Vitamin deficiencies
It is important to note that although Bleeding Gums may be an indication of a serious condition, most Gingivitis is caused by a build-up of plaque at the gum line. This excessive plaque, in turn, sets up inflammation which can ultimately lead to the more serious condition---periodontitis.

Mouth ulcers, as noted above, may have a wide range of causes.
